Preparing to RP
In order for an RPG to be fully enjoyable, there are certain things one should attempt to do before embarking on the game. Game Hybrid has listed another 5 key points below, containing some of the more obvious suggestions.
1. Do not forget to bring along the necessary components you will require to play the game. This might include a character sheet
2. By all means have a good time, but try as much as you can to avoid long discussions which are not related to the game. This disturbs the flow of the game and makes people distracted. Why not wait to have your conversation after the game?
3. Taking the above into consideration, try to separate yourself from the real world while playing. Let’s face it, much of the content of many RPGs is absolutely absurd! There is often very little or tenuous logic connected to them. Why ruin a game by arguing against a gamemaster’s decision because it does not fit into your ideas of what is normal to you.
4. Sometimes it might be worth appointing a leader for your party. It can help with small problems that can take a long time to resolve. This does not mean you should necessarily ask the loudest and bossiest in your group to take over; why not let one of your quieter friends or colleagues take the front line to test their abilities?
5. Keep personal issues outside of the game. Too many times I have seen players get sucked into petty battles (not necessarily physical!) which really are not because of the game. If it works out OK, it is possible players not getting along very well in real life might spice up a game; if it does not, it can ruin the game for all players.
