Here is a list of 5 very basic tips for those just starting out in their role-playing “careers”.

1. It is important to recognise that during your time playing the game, you are effectively handing over your life to your character. What you say and do as a character will determine what happens to you, and so you should be careful not to make hasty or moronic decisions.

2. When starting, the gamemaster should say “roleplay,” which is a suggestion that the player should now act. If the gamemaster fails to indicate when it is your turn to roleplay, gently remind him or her to do so. When more advanced in role-playing you will probably find such prompts unnecessary.

3. Try not to insight in-game violence unless absolutely necessary. It’s usually wise to avoid conflict as there is the potential you could end up killing a non-player character who could be helpful to you.

4. Remain united with your party. Sometimes it can be tempting to hinder your friends progress, but you will probably have more fun if you take your role seriously and try to help each other out.

5. Read extensively before embarking on a journey. It is certainly recommended that you explore the Internet and read as much as possible about Role-playing before you actually start. You will feel better and more capable in your party if you are fully prepared from the outlook.
